What is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome?
The easy answer to this question is shin splints. This is an injury that occurs when an exercise is intensified and when the tendons, bone tissue, and muscles are overworked. Many Springfield chiropractic patients come in for the problem, and we get them back to training quickly with rehab work.
The American medical association described shin splint symptoms as “pain or discomfort in the lower leg. It is caused by repetitive loading stress during running and jumping, and occurs in 4% to 35% of athletic and military populations. The diagnosis should be limited to musculoskeletal inflammation, excluding stress fractures or ischemic disorders.”
The exact cause is still unknown, but it seems to be that an inflation in work on the tibia where it cannot effectively take this extra work is a major cause. To connect it to a real world situation, if the shock absorbers on a car were worn out and the car was taken on a rocky, bumpy road, they wouldn’t be able to take the energy of the heavy amount of work.
The condition is most likely easy to identify by a doctor. Here at Springfield chiropractic we make diagnoses on the daily, so we are equipped to handle the situation spot on the with correct treatments.
There are a few treatment options for this condition. Rest and ice are suggested for any case. Ice helps to reduce inflammation and resting allows your body to heal the injury. After the pain and inflammation are eased, low intensity activity is initiated. These strength ring exercises are slowly put into effect, but if pain returns they should be stopped right away. Depending on the severity of the injury, it could take a few weeks to fully heal. If you think you suffer from shin splints, don’t hesitate to call and make an appointment with us, so we can get you healed and back in your training. We even treat Olympic athletes by helping them regain strength and heal properly.
