Spring is here and many New Year’s resolutions tend to fade away during this time. The American College of Sports Medicine has some simple guidelines that you can follow that will help you to stay motivated with exercise when the springtime comes rolls around, which is just about now.
Dr. David Perna, your Springfield chiropractor is going to give you these tips on how to stay motivated with exercise.
The first thing you can do is set a specific goal. Now you may be asking, what does this exactly mean? With spring coming around, races like 5ks, half marathons, and even full marathons are coming around too. Set yourself a goal to be in shape enough to run one of these races. If you’ve already done that race, why don’t you set a goal to beat your previous time. You could also sign up for something like an adventure race with friends.
If you’re a person that frequently goes to the gym, you could set a goal to do a certain amount of reps during an exercise that is higher than what you normally do. You could even make it a goal to bench press or do squats with a certain amount of weight.
While doing these things, make sure the goals you set are realistic, while trying to achieve them in a certain amount of time. Something that could help is writing you goals down so that you stay motivated, because you are seeing it regularly.
Next are environmental cues. We suggest things like: putting your gym bag right next to the door so that you remember it on your way out. When you’re in the car on your way home from work, you realize that you remembered to bring your bag with you.
Set some reminders on your phone. Maybe do this for a half hour before you’re supposed to end your work day so that you remind yourself to immediately go to the gym after work.
We have some more advice on how to stay motivated with exercise when the spring comes, so stay tuned for our next article where we will be discussing more tips like these.
