Are osteoporosis related fractures more dangerous for elderly men or elderly women? We are going to talk about the stats of this in the upcoming article.
This study comes from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and is from March of 2017. It looks at the risks of osteoporosis related fractures. It’s likely thought and actually confirmed that females are more susceptible to fractures related to osteoporosis. The study looked at one million elderly US citizens that experienced an osteoporosis related fracture. They found out that females were five times more likely to have an osteoporosis related fracture. But, within one year of the fracture, males were actually 50 percent more likely to have a higher death rate from the fracture.
The stats all together were: 19 percent of the males one year after the fracture died, and 13 percent of the females died following an osteoporosis related fracture. The thoughts for this have been spoken to that fractures for elderly patients is dangerous because of the decline in health due to inactivity.
It is important if you know someone who has a fracture who is older in age to tell them that they should seek medical advice from their physician to get a sort of therapy to work around the injury to remain active while recovering from the fracture.
