Our sciatica treatment options in New Jersey are based on evidence based studies designed to reduce patient’s pain and discomfort. We have many ways we can attack sciatica and chiropractic is just one area. And within chiropractic care we have a pretty healthy arsenal of techniques that we can employ to reduce sciatica. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Neural Mobilization & Sciatic Nerve Floss
With these two techniques, we are looking at incorporating certain movements to mobilize the entire nerve tract and restore proper function. With neural mobilization, we look to try and break up scar tissue or adhesions to reduce the impact and compression on the sciatic nerve.
Flossing is another technique whereby the patient is laying down and the chiropractor has the patients leg held up and straight. The patient is then asked to extend their neck and the chiro then moves the leg and hip until the sciatic pain is felt. The patient is then asked to flex their neck as the chiro lowers the leg. This is done a number of times. The chiropractor can also suggest similar exercises for the patient to do at home.
Mulligan Spinal Mobilization
With this technique, we are looking at any faults in the spine that may need correcting through what’s known as the Mulligan Spinal Mobilization. The joints in the spine are “designed” to be a certain way so as to be able to take load, burden and day to day living. However, over time, through injury, repetitive stress, trauma or more, the spine can get out of alignment causing problems elsewhere in the body including sciatica.
So the Mulligan Spinal Mobilization is just another way of helping to get things back to working order and reduce pain. This adjustment helps to get joints back into proper alignment, free up nerves and to break up more adhesions and so on.
We of course have many more treatment options “up our sleeves” and we will always examine you first to ascertain the issue and the most appropriate type of care for you. We may even use a combination of therapies to help depending on your condition, and that’s what makes our multi disciplined approach so successful in helping patients out of pain.
