Shoulder Pain Treatment at Back and Body Pain Relief

About Our Springfield Shoulder Pain Practice

Back and Body Pain Relief is a multidisciplinary clinic at 355 Route 22 E, Suite D, Springfield Township, NJ 07081. We diagnose and treat the full range of shoulder pain conditions — from acute sports injuries and rotator cuff strains to chronic impingement, frozen shoulder, and post-surgical rehabilitation — using advanced diagnostics and a coordinated team approach.

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which also makes it one of the most vulnerable to injury and overuse. Shoulder pain can develop from a single incident, from repetitive overhead activity, or gradually from postural imbalances that place ongoing stress on the rotator cuff and surrounding structures. Whatever the cause, accurate diagnosis is the critical first step to effective treatment.

Shoulder Conditions We Treat

  • Rotator cuff strains and tears — partial and full thickness tears of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, and teres minor
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome — compression of the rotator cuff tendons beneath the acromion during overhead movement
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) — progressive stiffening and pain from thickening of the shoulder joint capsule
  • AC joint sprains and separations — injury to the acromioclavicular joint, common in contact sports and falls
  • Biceps tendinopathy and tears — degeneration or tearing of the long head of biceps tendon
  • Labral tears (SLAP lesions) — tears of the glenoid labrum from acute trauma or repetitive overhead activity
  • Shoulder bursitis — inflammation of the subacromial bursa causing pain with overhead movement
  • Glenohumeral instability — recurring shoulder subluxation or dislocation
  • Calcific tendinopathy — calcium deposits within the rotator cuff tendons causing acute or chronic pain
  • Referred shoulder pain from the cervical spine — neck-related nerve irritation producing pain in the shoulder and upper arm

Our Diagnostic Approach

Diagnostic ultrasound is our primary tool for shoulder assessment — providing real-time imaging of the rotator cuff, biceps tendon, bursa, and AC joint. We can visualise tears, tendinopathy, bursitis, and calcification with a level of detail that makes ultrasound the gold standard for soft tissue shoulder diagnosis.

On-site X-ray assesses the bony structures of the shoulder — identifying calcific deposits, AC joint separation, and glenohumeral joint changes.

NCV/EMG testing differentiates shoulder pain caused by cervical nerve root compression from true shoulder pathology — critical when radiating arm symptoms are present.

🏥 Shoulder Pain Treatments at Back and Body Pain Relief

Our shoulder treatment plans are built around your specific diagnosis — targeting the exact structures involved to achieve genuine tissue healing and lasting functional recovery, not just temporary pain relief.

🏃 Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation

Shoulder rehabilitation is the cornerstone of recovery for most shoulder conditions. Our physical therapists design progressive programmes addressing rotator cuff strength, scapular stability, joint mobility, and movement mechanics — guided by your diagnosis and progressed systematically using our on-site gym equipment.

💥 Shockwave Therapy

Particularly effective for calcific tendinopathy, chronic rotator cuff tendinopathy, and shoulder impingement. Shockwave therapy breaks down calcium deposits, stimulates tendon healing, and reduces chronic inflammation — often providing significant relief in conditions that have not responded to other treatments.

🦴 Chiropractic Care

Dr Perna’s CCEP certification covers extremity joints including the shoulder. Chiropractic assessment and treatment of the glenohumeral, AC, and sternoclavicular joints — combined with cervical and thoracic spine treatment — addresses the full kinetic chain contributing to shoulder pain.

💡 Class IV Laser Therapy

Deep tissue laser reduces inflammation, accelerates tendon and tissue repair, and provides drug-free pain relief — particularly valuable for acute rotator cuff injuries and bursitis.

🤲 Medical Massage

Soft tissue therapy targeting the rotator cuff muscles, biceps, pectorals, and upper trapezius — releasing tension and adhesions that restrict shoulder movement and perpetuate pain.

💉 Trigger Point Injections

For shoulder pain driven by persistent muscular trigger points — common in the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and upper trapezius — targeted injections provide rapid relief and restore the ability to engage in rehabilitation.

🧘 Acupuncture

Integrated within the shoulder rehabilitation plan for pain management, muscle relaxation, and support of the healing process — particularly for chronic shoulder conditions and frozen shoulder.

⚡ Electric Stimulation

Reduces muscle spasm and pain in the shoulder and upper back, improving treatment tolerance and supporting recovery between sessions.

Shoulder Pain FAQs

How do I know if my shoulder pain is serious?

Seek prompt assessment if your shoulder pain followed a trauma, is accompanied by significant weakness or inability to raise the arm, involves numbness or tingling into the arm, or has not improved after a few weeks. A sudden severe onset of shoulder pain, particularly with warmth and swelling, also warrants prompt evaluation.

Can a rotator cuff tear heal without surgery?

Partial rotator cuff tears frequently respond well to conservative care — physical therapy, shockwave therapy, laser, and appropriate loading. Full thickness tears are more variable, but many patients achieve excellent functional recovery without surgery, particularly those with lower activity demands. After assessment, we will give you a clear picture of your options.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. Call 908-325-3000 or book online to schedule your shoulder evaluation.

Can neck problems cause shoulder pain?

Yes — cervical nerve root irritation commonly refers pain into the shoulder, upper arm, and even the hand. We use NCV/EMG testing to differentiate cervical-origin shoulder pain from true shoulder pathology, as the treatment approach differs significantly.

How long does shoulder rehabilitation take?

Mild acute injuries may resolve in a few weeks. Rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulder, and post-surgical rehabilitation typically require several months of progressive treatment. We will give you a realistic timeline after your initial assessment.
