As a chiropractor, I’m certainly expected to be something of a cheerleader for my chosen vocation. But I’m an enthusiastic one. I will jump the highest and scream the loudest, because I’m proud of my profession.
I am a Doctor of Chiropractic who wants you to know there’s a lot more to chiropractic than cracking sounds. Millions of people all over the world have enjoyed the myriad benefits of chiropractic care, since its inception as a medical discipline in the late 19th Century.
Highly trained professionals.
Something a lot of people don’t know about chiropractors is that we come to the study of it following four years of medical education. We then dedicate ourselves to a further four to five years of rigorous training and study.
This level of education is merited by the physiological intricacies of chiropractic and all other areas of medical study supporting it. And once we’re licensed to practice, it’s not over. Each year, chiropractors must meet continuing education requirements to maintain our licenses.
You bet we’re proud of our vocation.
Aligning the spine.
Because the spine is so crucial to the function of the body’s nervous system, its proper alignment is foundational to optimal health. And health includes freedom from pain.
When the spine is out of alignment, dysfunction immediately follows. Through the application of chiropractic techniques like adjustment and manipulation, alignment is restored, as well as systemic balance.
By restoring alignment, chiropractic care relieves pressure on nerves and the central nervous system in general. Once the balance has been restored, the body can start the process of healing itself. This is a scientific reality which benefits millions suffering from ailments like intense migraines, osteoarthritis and muscle pain and dysfunction.
The list of conditions being treated with chiropractic in the USA continues to grow, as people come to know more about it. Our colleagues in the medical profession are following suit. In 2017, spinal manipulation was named as the first line of non-invasive care for acute low back pain by the American College of Physicians.
A study published in the same year by the Journal of American Medicine concurred, naming spinal manipulation as the preferred therapeutic response to acute low back pain.
Safe and natural.
Something which makes me especially proud – especially in these days of the opioid epidemic – is the drug-free approach of my chosen area of medicine. Chiropractors seek to relieve pain by putting things back where they belong, so that order can be restored in the body. It’s a natural process, unaided by drugs, but it’s also a safe and non-invasive therapy.
Chiropractic care’s safety is proven. It’s 120-year track record as an effective medical practice achieves healing by restoring the body to its most effective state – one with an aligned spine, naturally supporting it.
