A herniated disc can be very painful. Anyone who’s encountered one knows this.
But if you’re proactive, resorting to surgery won’t be necessary. When the disc herniation has progressed to the point at which there’s weakness in the extremities, surgical intervention may be required. Difficulties with the bowel and bladder also indicate that the herniation has become acute.
For most other cases, conservative, non-invasive therapies are indicated to relieve pain. In concert with the patient’s efforts at home (targeted exercise and stretching), therapies to relieve pain and put the patient on track for recovery are highly effective.
Every disc herniation is different, so clinicians always seek the best way forward. At Back & Body, that’s the basis for our care model – personalized plans of intervention addressing individual need.
Conservative approaches.
When confronted with the pain of disc herniation, diagnostic tools are used to pinpoint the source and severity. Once this has been established, doctors like me proceed with conservative treatments which vary from patient to patient.
Over 1 month to 6 weeks, we apply methods we believe will be effective in any given case. We’ll add or subtract treatments as we move forward, seeking the most effective solution to the problem. As we do so, we’ll talk to you about lifestyle factors and exercise to help prevent future and to ensure you can function normally.
At Back Body, the chiropractic services I provide are supported by acupuncture, sports medicine and physical therapy. All these disciplines can play a part in relieving pain, as we tailor care to the uniqueness of each case.
Body mechanics and other factors.
Understanding the way your body moves is key to its overall health. Patients receive advice from Back & Body clinicians which can help them strengthen their bodies, making them less vulnerable to injuries like herniated discs.
A physical therapist, working with other team members, is a great resource in this respect. Your chiropractor can also help with this educational component of herniated disc therapy. The more you understand about your body, the less likely you are to experience physical stressors like erosion (wear and tear) of the discs due to misuse.
While we prefer therapies which don’t involve drugs, it’s clear that some patients find certain treatment models difficult to bear, at the beginning of therapy. Drug therapy can ease the patient through the process in some cases, allowing the muscles to relax. Inflammation can also be reduced via drug therapy.
Diversified herniated disc therapy.
Herniated disc therapy to stop pain and avoid surgery is generally practiced with diversity of care in mind. At Back & Body, all the care you need is under one roof, giving patients access to four distinct medical disciplines and a multiplicity of therapeutic tools.
