How Does Medical Massage Differ from Regular Massage in Springfield?

February 4, 2019 By Dr David Perna DC

We offer medical massage in Springfield as a treatment option and there are some differences between it and a spa massage. The two are very separate procedures, which a lot of people tend to forget. Although they do have some things in common, there are some significant differences between the two that are good to know for your own health and well being.

The most obvious difference between the two is the sole purpose of the massage itself. A spa massage is performed for relaxation and de-stressing, while a medical massage is done for health reasons, and is usually a prescribed treatment by a doctor. The final result in both massages actually drastically differs. Check out some of the main differences between medical massage in Springfield compared to a standard one.

Here are some more differences between a medical massage and a spa massage:

The patient and client relationship.

This is one of the first thing that differs. A medical massage is most likely performed by a physical therapist, who will possibly have notes from your doctor reviewing your condition in order to get the best treatment and results. A medical massage may also be covered partly or fully by your insurance company because it is considered a medical procedure and treatment. A spa massage is obviously not going to be covered by insurance of any type because it is meant to be relaxing and de-stressing. It is more about the experience rather than a medical massages job of treating injuries or pain.

Purpose.

A spa massage will often times feel alike to a medical massage if you’ve had both, but don’t be fooled. The purpose and techniques performed in the two differ greatly. A spa massage is usually a classic Swedish massage thats purpose is to relax you. A medical massage is done by medically trained professionals, and may involve certain techniques to help treat the injury or pain. These could be trigger point therapy or myofascial release.

How the session is planned.

Another large difference is how exactly the session is planned based on your individual needs. A spa massage is the same technique and planning for every client that comes in. Now let’s discuss a medical massage: A pro athlete may want a medical massage to treat their injuries, and a whiplash patient will want a medical massage but for their injury. With this being said, there are many different reasons why people need medical massages, so we are trained in every field to ensure you get the proper treatment for your condition.

Frequency of visits.

The final difference that a medical massage in Springfield is different is the frequency of your massage visits. A medical massage will require an amount of planned visits (amount depends on your injury or accident) to be sure that your condition is fully treated and you are healed. A regular massage is a once in a blue moon type of procedure or whenever you feel like it.
