One of the many conditions we treat here at Back and Body NY is acute trauma, predominantly from athletics injuries. The most common injuries we see are to the neck, knee and ankles. Sometimes, diagnosis may be tricky depending on the injury and so imaging is another way to understand the scope of the injury in order to make an accurate diagnosis.
Many of the injuries or pain complaints we treat, we don’t need to take X-rays or have MRIs sent out. We are able to understand and treat according to our knowledge, experience and collaborative care.
So here’s a few things we go through before taking the decision to send out for imaging based on different areas of the body. Working from the bottom up…
Foot and Ankle Injuries
Typically we will use imaging if any of the conditions below are met along with pain.
- Not being able to put much weight on the foot
- Tenderness on or around the malleolus areas, navicular or the 5th
Knee Injuries
We look at using imaging if there is knee pain present along with any of the following:
- Patient 55 or older
- Unable to flex the knee 90 degrees or more
- Tenderness around the knee area
- Unable to bear weight after 4 steps
Spinal Injuries
Imaging is normally ordered when any of the below conditions are met.
- Patient is over 65
- Has issues moving the head
- Severe injury
- Spinal pain
- Neurological symptoms
As stated above, for many cases we do not require or send for imaging as we are able to treat based on knowledge, experience and looking at the injury. There is normally a good reason to order imaging so that we can see what is happening when the condition has not responded to regular treatment or is complex.
One of the beauties of having a collaborative team approach with many therapies available is that the doctors and therapists are able to come together and discuss a patient’s condition and determine the best course of treatment for that person. A great deal of knowledge and experience along with our guidelines and protocols enables us to provide the best and most tailor made care available.
Imaging does help us to see more difficult conditions better and to work out the best plan of action for these types of injury.
