The spine is complex. Consisting not only of bones, but of nerves and soft tissue that protects the vertebrae, your spine is to be approached with great respect. It’s the pillar of your body, so whatever therapy you choose to address dysfunction in the spinal column is a matter of careful forethought and consideration.
A non-invasive approach is always preferable if viable for addressing the condition you’re seeking to heal. Surgery isn’t always the answer. The very nature of surgery, which requires anesthesia and exposing the body to potential infection, is traumatic. While surgery is sometimes required, it should never be the first option turned to for resolving pain.
Non-surgical spinal decompression: a safe treatment option is an emerging therapy that’s breaking ground for patients seeking a non-invasive solution to conditions of the spine. Read on to find out more about it.
What is it?
Utilizing a motorized traction table, non-surgical spinal decompression’s goal is to alleviate pressure on the discs. When your discs are compressed, your nerves are under pressure too, which is where the pain comes from – your nerves.
By exerting negative pressure on adjacent vertebrae, balance is restored to your spine, aligning it correctly and allowing hydration and nutrients to restore your affected discs to health and function.
What should I expect?
Non-surgical spinal decompression is delivered in sessions which last for between 20 and 25 minutes. I explain to my patients what they can expect in terms of how the therapy feels. You should know that it’s completely painless and safe. Some of my patients even report feeling relaxed by the therapy’s action on their spines.
You’ll be fitted with a harness to ensure your back and neck are in the right position for the therapy to proceed. Your back will then be gently elongated as you lie on the motorized table, relieving pressure on your discs.
A patient safety switch is part of the apparatus used, so that if you feel any discomfort during your session, you can stop it.
How many sessions will I need?
While this varies from patient to patient, depending upon the acuity of the compression being treated, I find that most patients find relief after between 20 and 25 sessions, over the course of 4 to 6 weeks.
More severe cases, of course, will require more sessions, but this will be discussed with you prior to getting started with your treatment.
Non-surgical spinal decompression is an excellent alternative to surgery for conditions like back pain, sciatica or neck pain. Disc degeneration and bulging discs respond very positively to this treatment.
