Physical therapy for shoulder pain and injury is one of the core treatments we provide. While shoulder pain is common, it is also quite complex to treat and an individual treatment plan is often prescribed to patients. Rather than simply applying a one size fits all approach, we tailor make treatments to patients based on their injury and needs.
We always ask patients to do exercises on their own at home to help with their own progress, sometimes even videoing (as we did with this patient) and sending them to him so that he wouldn’t forget what he needed to do.
Let’s take a look at his shoulder pain exercise routine. It’s broken down into three sections, resistance exercises, conentric loading and static holds.
Exercise 1 Resistance Exercises
This starts with a band held on the outside of the right foot and held in the outside of the right hand (or the side where the shoulder issue is). The patient then pulls the band up in front of him. This helps the bicep and the shoulder to strengthen.
Exercise 2 Concentric Exercises
This sees the strap held under the opposite foot and held in the same hand as before and the motion is to bring the arm and hand out to the side.
Exercise 3 Static Holds
A series of three static holds see various loads applied to the shoulder which helps strengthen and increase support for them.
We aim to help each patient through similar ways, depending on their own condition and injuries. This approach has led to many successful and happy patient outcomes for us over the years, both here in Springfield and our sister practice in Manhattan.
