Have you heard of the term radicular pain? It’s pain that is felt in one area of the body, but the source of the problem is somewhere else and the pain radiates down to the sore spot. Sciatica is a great example, but this post is going to focus on radicular arm pain and how we can diagnose, manage and treat that. Radicular pain can be difficult to diagnose and treat and it may also take some time to recover from, but through systematic treatments, regular communication, we can help expedite the process.
We have several methods in how we can help, diagnose and treat such things.
1. Evaluation Process (Nerve Tensioning)
Our nerves are dynamic. The slip and glide around as the body moves, and in normal function there is no problem. Sometimes though, the nerves can get pinched or impaired and thus create this radicular pain that shoots down the arm.
We can perform strategic stretches and movements of your arm to help us understand where the problem is coming from. This is the first part of the process.
2. Management (Nerve Flossing)
Next we need to manage the problem and treat it. This management comes through the form of nerve flossing which stretches the nerve, releases and stretches again in a repetitive manner. This action helps restore the nerve to proper function along with releasing any scar tissue or adhesions which are impairing it.
3. Measurement
So how do we know if it’s working or not? Measurement. We have to measure where the patient is at at the beginning of the process and continually monitor and measure to see how treatment is affecting the condition. As we have performed this process many times on previous patients, we have a very good idea of what to expect to see, so we can use this data to analyze our treatment on you and adjust accordingly.
Because nerve problems can take a while to resolve, it is even more key to take constant measurements to enable us to see how things are progressing.
Patient Education
Finally, you the patient needs to understand what we are doing. We need to communicate with you throughout the entire process so you understand what to expect, what we are doing and how to care for yourself in between appointments. This is perhaps the most important stage of the treatment process.
Following these four steps systematically and consistently helps all our patients. We have a history and data of previous patients so we can communicate expectations of treatment based on the original condition and be able to tell you with a degree of accuracy how things will progress throughout the therapies.
