Say what you like about millennials. This crop of young folks is one which is learning from the past, rejecting what they don’t care for and reinventing the world in their own image. Say they’re entitled. Say they’re self-involved. Whatever you say, the fact remains that millennials are mavericks who enjoy breaking the mold.
And they’re not just breaking it for spite (despite what some boomers contend). They’re doing it because they’ve seen a better way forward and they’re determined to take it.
There’s something to be said for a generation that’s returning to chiropractic care as a preventative discipline. And I’m not just saying that because I’m a chiropractor. I’m saying that because it took some critical thinking on their part to decide that an ounce of prevention was worth a pound of cure.
And we could use a little more critical thinking, if you want my opinion!
Let’s look at some of the reasons millennials are opting for chiropractic care and see if some of us can’t take a page out of their book.
Openness.
Millennials aren’t yet old enough for their attitudes to have galvanized (or calcified, depending on how you look at it). In addition, they have access to a world of information in a technologically connected setting. That’s an advantage older generations didn’t have.
With access to unlimited information about numerous subjects, millennials are more willing to juxtapose healthcare models and examine their relative merits critically. They’ve come to understand that chiropractic is a holistic discipline that prevents pain as well as relieves it.
Millennial openness precludes dismissing ideas and ways of doing things based on hearsay and anecdotes, in favor of evidence and data.
Point, millennials!
That ounce of prevention.
The same critical thinking facility that permits millennials to view care models on their merits allows them to see what’s around them clearly. The habits of mid-Century America (fast food, additives, pharmaceuticals, sedentary lifestyles), they’ve observed, are unhealthy. They want to do things differently and prevent illness by living healthier, more balanced lifestyles.
Millennials know that skyrocketing obesity, diabetes and osteoarthritis rates are due to the mid-Century American lifestyle, so they’re taking steps to avoid it, at any cost and part of that is turning to chiropractic care to help them maintain their bodies in better condition, for the future they know is coming.
They’ve witnessed the healthcare chaos.
All around millennials are indicators that healthcare is governed by a faceless system of insurance which makes it tough to be sick in America.
So, they’re doing everything they can to avoid becoming sick and falling prey to a system which fails to support health crises adequately. They’re opting out of insurance in favor of a care model that empowers them to live healthier, body-aware lives.
Say what you like about millennials, but while the older generation was guzzling sodas and watching television, these guys were watching the consequences of those behaviors. They want better for themselves and that means chiropractic.
