What is Selphyl®?
Selphyl® is a cutting-edge system designed to rapidly prepare a small blood sample at the patient’s point of care. This system effectively removes nearly all contaminating cells, ensuring consistent results regardless of the operator’s technique.
How does Selphyl® work?
Selphyl® functions on the principle that blood platelets contain essential proteins necessary for tissue repair and regeneration. During a routine blood collection, the Selphyl® kit separates and concentrates the patient’s own platelets, while removing unwanted red and white blood cells to create an ultrapure substance.
What is the Selphyl® process?
1. Blood Collection: During a brief office visit (approximately 30 minutes), a small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn into a vacuum collection tube containing a cell separator gel.
2. Centrifugation: The tube is placed in a centrifuge and spun for six minutes to separate the blood into a plasma suspension.
3. Cell Separation: Red and white blood cells are isolated below the cell separator gel.
4. Transfer: Plasma are transferred using a closed system into a second vacuum tube containing a small amount of calcium chloride solution.
5. Fibrin Formation: Fibrin polymerization begins, and the substance remains in liquid form for roughly 10 minutes.
6. Ready for Use: The patient’s own Selphyl® is then ready for application as determined by clinical needs.
How long does the procedure take?
The entire Selphyl® process takes about 30 minutes and is performed in your doctor’s office.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments required varies based on the individual patient, the desired outcome, and the treatment plan outlined by your doctor.
Is the treatment painful?
Selphyl® Ultrapure is close to physiologic pH, unlike more acidic alternatives. Although there may be temporary discomfort, redness, or bruising immediately following the treatment, these symptoms typically resolve quickly.
Are there any side effects?
Since Ultrapure Selphyl® is derived from the patient’s own blood, the risk of rejection is minimal. Some patients might experience temporary irritation, mild swelling, bruising, itching, discoloration, or tenderness post-treatment. Persistent irritation should be discussed with your physician.
Can anyone be allergic to Selphyl®?
There is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction because the system uses the patient’s own blood and contains no animal or synthetic products.
