Treating Pain Without a Prescription

January 24, 2018 By Dr David Perna DC

chiropractor treating neck pain

As a chiropractor, I’m committed to helping patients find effective ways to manage and relieve pain without resorting to pharmaceutical options.  It’s part of what chiropractors do, as medical professionals.

Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you’ll know that the USA is currently in the throes of an epidemic of opioid addiction.  This medication is too often prescribed.  Due to its highly addictive nature, physicians and other healthcare providers are looking at ways to reduce the use of these drugs.

Just to give you an idea of how big the problem is, sales of opioids soared between 1999 and 2014. They quadrupled.  As a result, more than half the overdose deaths in the US are attributable to these powerful, addictive painkillers.

Treating pain without a prescription is something I believe in, partially for this reason.  Because chiropractic addresses the interconnectedness of physical systems, we have the tools to relieve pain without resorting to pharmaceuticals which may only mask the presence of pain, or even lead to an addiction.

The whole person.

As I said above, chiropractors work with the interconnected nature of the body’s systems.  By addressing the whole person, we’re able to get to the root of the problem.  Prescription or over-the-counter pain medication can’t do that.  It can address the pain (temporarily), but it won’t resolve the problem.

Pain comes from somewhere.  It doesn’t just “happen”.  It happens because there’s a physical problem which has impacted your nervous system.  When the nervous system is under stress, pain signals are sent the brain.

Once the effects of your prescription wear off, the pain is still there, because the root cause is still there.  So, it’s the cause of the pain and not the pain itself which requires attention.

Safe and natural.

Chiropractors are extensively trained to understand the nature of the human body to treat physical dysfunction with the application of manipulation, traction and other therapeutic responses (like adjustment) under the rubric of our professional sector.

Following a careful physical examination, we call on state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to pinpoint any musculoskeletal issues which may be presenting as pain. From there, we devise a therapeutic program to address your pain effectively, using hands guided by professional knowledge.

Without calling on pharmaceutical supports, we heal and relieve pain, naturally.

Chiropractic plus.

I’m confident in my professional abilities, but as a clinician, I’m grateful to work in an environment in which I have access to clinicians with complementary skill sets that support my work.

It’s often the case that patients can heal more quickly when what I do is backed up by modalities like acupuncture, physical therapy and sports medicine.  This multi-disciplinarian approach has won our flagship clinic in Manhattan numerous awards.

That’s because it works.

Integrated care is the wave of the future and the opioid crisis only makes its global adoption more urgent.  By finding innovative ways to relieve pain, Back & Body is leading the way.  We’ve brought our leading-edge pain relief model to New Jersey, making award-winning care available to patients here.
