Sugar is the number one drug responsible for so many deaths and health issues across the globe. It is addictive and too much of it affects your life in so many ways. Sugary drinks are amongst the worst due to the fact that they don’t fill you up and you consume more without even thinking about it. While you may be taking care of yourself in what you eat, what you drink is possibly even more crucial. And for pregnant moms, it’s also true.
A study published in Pediatrics in July 2017 looked at the effect (if any) drinking sugary drinks as a pregnant mom had on an unborn child.
The study group looked at 8 year old children who drank half a serving once a week and compared it to 8 year old children whose mother had drank at least 2 servings of sugary drinks each week during their second trimester.
The study found that on average, the children whose mother drank during that time of her pregnancy were around 2lbs heavier.
Now while that may not sound a lot, when you consider that 2lbs could account for up to 5% of the total body weight, that becomes significant.
They concluded that pregnant moms should really not drink sugary drinks during pregnancy if they can help it for this reason and of course the increased potential for obesity later in life.
In terms of Back and Body’s role in all this, we do see many patients whose back pain has been increased due to weight issues, so for that reason alone, it’s best to avoid sugary drinks as much as possible and stick with water.
