One of the most common conditions we see here at Back and Body in Springfield is people who sit at desks all day and complain of lower back pain. The biggest issue with sitting at a desk all day is inactivity. We often suggest people who sit at desks to take regular breaks, have a little walk or do some simple stretches. Doing these two things will help things along. But a fairly recent innovation, the standing desk has revolutionized things even further.
These desks are great because it means that the user is not inactive, they are not sitting down which leads to compressed joints and other issues. Because you are on your feet, you generally move around a little more and this helps, but while it is better for you, it’s still not perfect as standing in one position can lead to different problems.
There is something else that will greatly improve the experience and help even further and that is a foot rest.
A foot rest that is a few inches in height can greatly reduce the effects on the low back even more. Consider bars in the olden days before it became common to sit on a stool at a bar. Most of the drinkers would stand and lean against the bar, but there was also something else that existed and that was a rod that went the length of the bar a few inches above the floor. People drinking at the bar would simply put one foot up at a time and rest it, and then exchange it, and so on.
It meant there was a variety of different positions that the drinker could stand in comfortably without suffering injury.
And that can be the same with standing desks. By placing a footrest that is a few inches in height, it can greatly help the user to be more comfortable and to reduce the effects of standing all day.

Studies have suggested a footrest height of around 10% of the body height would enable the user to be more comfortable. Studies also showed that regular use of this foot rest was another great reducer in lower back pain.
A further tip is to use good quality footwear that helps to support your feet and reduce footache. Again good footwear helps to support the lower back as well.
