What is Deep Gluteal Syndrome?
Deep gluteal syndrome is a condition that stems from the buttock area and can be aggravated when the sciatic nerve is impeded in some way. Pain generally emanates down the back of the leg. There are several things that can cause this issue including gluteal muscles, the hamstring, space occupying lesions and more.
Due to the close relationship between the lumbar spine and the hip, it’s important for your doctor to examine these areas as well so as to rule out any problems or causes from these areas. Failure to do so could potentially lead to chronic pain and a significant loss of quality of life. So it’s important to diagnose early as possible and of course accurately.
As such, it’s also important to take into account the patients history and a detailed physical examination to fully understand what is going on. Prior problems with the sciatic nerve can also play a significant part in the issue.
What else can be done?
One study showed that a simple seated exercise may help the condition. In a seated position, cross one leg over the other. Hold the knee of this crossed leg and pull it towards the opposite shoulder. Arch the lower back and then rotate the base of the torso gently to the side. Then in circular motion, work the entire frame. This should help to stretch the piriformis muscle and thus help keep the condition under control. Do this for 30 seconds to a minute several times a day.
Ultimately though, early intervention to the condition itself and appropriate treatment is the best way forward. In the early stages, conservative treatment is sufficient for the syndrome, but if it is too bad then injections or even surgery may be necessary to correct it.
