So how can diet affect carpal tunnel syndrome anyway? Well, carpal tunnel syndrome deals with the inflammation of the median nerve which is essentially what causes pain and associated symptoms. If the diet is altered to consume more anti inflammatory foods, then we may be able to better control the problem. Here’s a few foods that can help.
Fish
Salmon, tuna and sardines are among some of the fish you can eat that have natural anti inflammatory properties. They contain omega 3 fats known as EPA and DHA which help reduce inflammation. Moreover, supplements taken from these fish can also be taken if you’re not a fan of fish. Be aware though, if you are preparing for surgery or take a blood thinner, double check with your primary to ensure taking supplements is ok.
Walnuts
While not as effective as fish, walnuts contain ALA (alpha lipoic acid) which also helps inflammation. It’s another omega 3 fatty acid and is an excellent option for this control. You can also consume flaxeed and chia seed as other options too.
Pineapple
Pineapple contains an enzyme known as bromelain and this has the added benefit of helping digestion. Again, be careful if you are taking at higher concentration as it too can thin blood.
Tumeric
This is found in curry sauces and mustards and when combined with ginger or black pepper can make for another excellent anti inflammatory solution.
Spinach
Finally consuming spinach can help reduce pain as it is rich in vitamin B6.
Consuming these foods and others like them, can help to reduce the amount of inflammation, thus reducing the possibility of carpal tunnel syndrome. We can advise other carpal tunnel syndrome diet solutions as well as special exercises to help your condition too.
