How Physical Therapy Reduces Opioid Use in Springfield

January 26, 2019 By Dr David Perna DC

The opioid pain medication abuse rate in the US has been rapidly growing for years, and will continue to go up. This means researchers are always looking at different data and studies to find an alternative to manage chronic musculoskeletal pain. Looking at opioid addiction in Springfield, we found in a study that 50 percent of adults have been or are currently affected by musculoskeletal pain. This costs The US about 874 billion dollars. The Journal of the American Medical Association has looked at some recent data of insurance claims from 2007-2015 to compare the benefits of opioid medication, or early physical therapy for pain.

The study done by the Journal of the American Medical Association actually discovered that those getting treated with physical therapy within 30 days of their noticement of musculoskeletal low back pain, shoulder, and knee pain instead of opioid use, had relations to a 5-10 percent reduction in the usage of opioids. This research shows that using early physical therapy could potentially drastically reduce the use of opioid medications while lessening the amount of Americans addicted to the drugs.

Although there have been many other alternatives to opioids looked at and tested, early physical therapy has been the first to be studied over this long period of time with the large amount of insurance claims. This study is a main reason why doctors can see that early physical therapy is an excellent, non addictive, and natural treatment that has similar results to a highly dangerous drug with many lasting side effects. Opioid addiction in Springfield is something we too can help to reverse.

When you come and see us, we can provide many treatment options. Taking a drug that eliminates pain is seemingly the easiest option, but the risks that come along with this method definitely outweigh its benefits. All of the positives opioid medication use have and can certainly be matched or even improved with early physical therapy. Using early physical therapy first is a wonderful, non addictive alternative.

In our part of the battle against opioid addiction in Springfield, our treatment plans can help you find relief without medication. However, that’s not to say that opioids don’t have their place in treatment, because they do. For instance, if your pain is so great that you cannot easily undertake therapy to correct your problem, we may prescribe opioids as a temporary measure to reduce your pain levels in order for you to be able to handle therapy. As therapy is doing its job, then the need for medication will reduce and you will be able to come off completely and be pain free.
