At Back & Body Pain Relief here in Springfield, we have many patients coming in suffering headaches and or neck pain. The way lifestyles are these days, it’s no wonder we are seeing more and more of this type of problem. Use of computers, cell phones and more have gradually changed our posture to one where we are looking down more often than not. While looking down may not be an issue in itself, the way we tilt our heads is, as each extra degree our heads are tilted forwards adds pounds of weight that our neck muscles need to bear.
And that generally brings neck pain and headaches.
A recent study lasting four weeks in 2018 looked at two groups performing either scapular stabilization (exercise based around the shoulder area) or neck stabilization exercises for around 30 minutes a week. Both groups showed improvements in their conditions, but the group that exercised around the scapular showed to have had more improvement.
Further studies have confirmed very similar results in either form of exercise, with the scapular stabilization still coming out on top. One study looked at students who typically have that forward head posture in class, performed both types of exercise and were found to have much better posture months after.
Another study looked at these exercises along with manual therapy (chiropractic) and found that the combination of both the exercises and manual therapy contributed to even better outcomes.
