Also known as adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder is a painful condition which is exactly what it sounds like – a painful loss of mobility in the shoulder joint.
Frozen shoulder begins with pain and limited mobility. Both aspects of the condition worsen over time. But then, almost magically, it resolves in from 1 to 3 years.
But most people don’t have 1 to 3 years to be in pain and unable to move one of their shoulders.
The 3 stages
The first stage of this condition is “freezing”. Movement becomes difficult, due to pain when you attempt it. Mobility starts to become limited.
In the “frozen” stage, the pain subsides somewhat, but your shoulder is difficult to move.
Finally, the “thawing” stage arrives and your shoulder joint begins to behave as it did before it “froze”.
No one is completely sure why frozen shoulder happens. What we do know is that the connective tissue encapsulating the ligaments and tendons in your shoulder thickens and tightens, restricting movement.
People with diabetes and those over the age of 40 are most susceptible to frozen shoulder, especially women.
Those who’ve had surgery which requires them not to move one arm can develop frozen shoulder. If that describes you, be sure to talk to your doctor about exercises to foster continuing shoulder joint mobility. But if you have already developed frozen shoulder, Back & Body Medical can help.
