We’ve discussed the benefits of combining chiropractic care with acupuncture in another post. In this post, we’ll examine the role of physical therapy in chiropractic treatment.
While some may find it unusual to talk about these two practices in the same breath, it’s the heart of our work at Back & Body. Our multi-disciplinarian care model has been proven effective by our superior patient outcomes.
We believe that combining therapies to answer patient need is an approach whose time has come. That’s why we host 4 distinct disciplines in one clinic. This gives patients access to advanced and thoughtful responses to whatever’s ailing them.
With all that said, let’s talk about the role of physical therapy in chiropractic treatment and find out how beneficial the two areas are, when combined.
More in common than you think.
While chiropractic and physical therapy may seem like very different ways of going about pain relief, they have much more in common than you think.
Both address pain and mobility issues. Both apply hands-on solutions to those issues. Where the two disciplines diverge is in focus and application. Both assist with pain and rehabilitation from injuries and surgery, but in different ways.
While physical therapy and chiropractic are engaged with resolving musculoskeletal issues, the two address this using variant modalities. Chiropractors use manipulation and adjustment which addresses the function of the skeletal and muscular systems. Physical therapists work with patients to correct gait, and muscle coordination issues.
The two disciplines address similar challenges, but with differing methodologies and a varied range of expertise. This makes them a tremendous clinical match for those who’ve been injured, are recovering from surgery, or are dealing with mobility issues arising from aging.
Specific areas of expertise.
As a chiropractor, my focus is on the spine. It’s the pillar of the body and its misalignment can be responsible for myriad complaints, from head to foot. That means my expertise intertwines with that of a physical therapist, as some of what they do will implicate my knowledge and vice versa.
Like chiropractors, physical therapists are body mechanics experts, restoring mobility occasioned by dysfunction. When we work together, the results of our combined knowledge add up to exceptional care for patients.
The role of physical therapy in chiropractic treatment is to harmonize the knowledge of both practitioners, creating a 360° approach. That’s a win for us as practitioners and a win for patients who draw on our combined disciplines.
Together, we can do more.
