If you’re having neck pain, you’d probably think that the cause of neck pain is coming from the neck. This is surprisingly not always the case. Focusing on the neck for diagnosis and treatment may help, but sometimes we have to dig a little bit deeper to find the real root of the issue. For some, neck pain could just be a cause of another condition located somewhere else in the body, which must be addressed so that the patient can have permanent relief.
One cause of neck pain could be in the shoulder. Research has shown that both conditions can occur simultaneously. It has been shown that treating a cervical condition helps improve the overall pain in the shoulders. Four published studies have also shown the opposite to be the case. The review concluded that patients suffering from neck pain had improvements with their pain following a three week scapular stabilization exercise treatment plan.
Another review found that the mid back could be the cause of neck pain. Manipulative therapy targeting the mid back also showed improvements in cervical pain for many patients.
Even more research has shown that even issues in the lower body can be causing neck pain. In 2019, a study found that patients with neck pain showed differences in walking symmetry, which is a known risk factor for problems with hip and knee joints. Patients even tend to walk with a stiffer spine who suffer from neck pain, which another 2019 study found. Inequality in leg length is also a possible factor in contributing to knee, hip, and lower back dysfunction.
This all connects to the neck because if your neck is over compensating for the problems in your lower back, this will cause strain and wear and tear.
