Today, we will be talking about a recent study on why it is important to have an understanding and follow directions.
The treatment process that the study looks at is the mulligan process. This process has been around for decades, and it is a simple, easy way for patients to treat themselves. When you look at neck pain, headaches, and dizziness, there are a lot of things that patients can do themselves. It is always good to provide treatments like manipulation or mobilization that you can do in your practice to get a patient out of pain, but when dealing with joint pains, after loosening up they tend to tighten back up. We need to prevent this from happening.
Here, we often tell our patients that we are going to get those joints moving, but you are responsible for keeping them mobile. Mulligan mobilizations are just that. The best part about mulligan mobilizations is that they are easy to do at home, they’re safe, effective, and they don’t require using a lot of expensive rehab equipment.
Regarding neck pain, we can use manipulation in our office to help alleviate the symptoms of neck pain. Mulligan mobilizations can keep that range going, which is why it is important to listen to your chiropractor and follow directions so that your symptoms do not come back.
Mulligan mobilization can be done using a dish towel, believe it or not! Fold the dish towel long ways, place the dish towel behind the head right near the cervical spine, and slightly move your head up and then relax. What you are doing is forcing some access function outside of the upper cervical spine to help get that joint moving.
Remember that it is important to listen to your chiropractor and follow what they are telling you to do at home, not just in the office.
